Whole-Body MRI Capability
Both University Park Campus and the College of Medicine will have on-site Siemens 3 Tesla whole-body magnetic resonance imaging systems that will provide the capability of MRI and fMRI imaging.
Penn State has purchased one Siemens 3 Tesla whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system to be located on the University Park campus and an additional unit to be housed at the College of Medicine. The MRI facility at University Park offers comprehensive services to Penn State Researchers and is regularly staffed by a physicist, MRI technician, and study coordinator.

The on-campus availability of imaging will allow researchers to perform non-invasive structural and functional (fMRI) imaging of adults, children, small animals, and materials. In the social and behavioral sciences MRI can be used to examine questions regarding the aging process, including:
- brain structure and state
- elementary perception
- social judgments
- normal learning and cognition
- affective and cognitive pathologies
- normal development
- neuro-degeneration
This new technology complements the recently-established Human Electrophysiology Facility, the Center for Neural Engineering, and the Virtual Reality Laboratory.
